Few artists can say they've changed the course of music history, but Dr. Bobby Jones can easily say it without a hint of exaggeration or arrogance. With a resume that could earn him the title of "The King of All Gospel Media," Bobby Jones has mastered television, movies, books, radio and music - single-handedly helping to place gospel music on the map. Even those who know little about gospel music recognize the name "Dr. Bobby Jones" as synonymous with the genre.
The television pioneer, gospel music icon and GRAMMY winner has been a mainstay for decades. Although known primarily as a television personality, Jones has always been a recording artist and his new CD, The Ambassador, takes him from the stage to the studio. Jones has tapped some of the biggest names in gospel music for this commemorative musical offering, calling on such friends as Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Karen Clark Sheard, Donald Lawrence, Darwin Hobbs, PAJAM, Teddy Riley, Shirley Murdock, and his longtime music director Derrick Lee. The Ambassador is a project that welcomes back Dr. Bobby Jones back after a ten-year hiatus from recording.
The project is an expression of thanks for the amazing success and incredible longevity he's been blessed with. Even in his wildest dreams, Jones could have never imagined that he would be afforded the opportunities he's been given. "When I was growing up, I loved gospel music," says Jones. "I knew what my limitations were, but I always knew I wanted to sing. Still, I never thought I would be at this point – being recorded by the top record label in the nation, Zomba. And after 10 years of just doing television, it's an honor to be recording again."
Clearly, The Ambassador is a celebration for Bobby Jones. Opening with a spoken word of gratitude, the CD starts with a gut-wrenching performance of the Donald Lawrence penned "The Hand of the Lord," with vocals from gospel song stylist Vanessa Bell-Armstrong. On "Can't Nobody," Karen Clark Sheard wails over a slick contemporary groove; and Jones duets with her, making the track a rousing hand-clapper.
Gospel crooner Darwin Hobbs makes a guest appearance on the mellow, God-focused "He Alone Knows," penned by V. Michael McKay. Backed by New Life, with lyrics centering on the sovereignty of God, the song is beautifully thoughtful and moving.
Bobby Jones loves praising the Lord and he gets his chance throughout The Ambassador. "Serve The Lord" is certainly no exception. Mixing a modern flair with traditional church elements, the song finds the artist singing about why he loves living a life of service.
Those who remember the great gospel songs of old will reminiscence with the remake of Keith Pringle & The Pentecostal Community Choir's energized "Call Him Up." PAJAM helps Jones bring the tune into the new millennium with a funky, contemporary, beat-banging rendition. To that end, Jones makes an ultra-contemporary move on "Dr. Jesus," a track dripping with a serious urban bang. With the musical help of Teddy Riley, Jones brings the concept of 'The Great Physician' to another level. This is one of the many gems of this CD.
"King of Kings" is a worshipful track. Flowing with pretty melodies and tight harmonies, the song, fronted by Shirley Murdock, is worthy of lifted hands. Throughout the song, Bobby Jones exhorts and converses with the Lord in a stance of thanksgiving. Taking us to the Christian dance club, the artist has no problem "getting down" with the best of them on the hyperactive track "Free," the CD's closer.
When speaking of the project, Jones has difficulty choosing a favorite song. "They're all my favorites; they all have their own special style. I love each song for its individuality. It's like friendships; you appreciate each one for different reasons. I love each song on this project!"
